Dunedin Airport Welcomes a Year of Milestones

02 October 2025

Dunedin Airport has released its 2025 Annual Report, marking a milestone year defined by the return of international services, significant infrastructure investment, and a strengthened commitment to sustainability and community.

Dunedin Airport Chairperson Chris Hopkins said the year was a turning point for the airport as it proudly welcomed back direct international air services after a five-year hiatus.

“The inaugural service on 24 June was more than a celebration of aviation — it was a reconnection of people, ideas, whānau, and opportunity across our two coasts. Jetstar’s Dunedin–Gold Coast route, is a defining milestone in our Flight Plan 2050 strategy and a tangible example of what’s possible when partners, regions, and communities unite with shared purpose,” said Mr Hopkins.

Key achievements in 2025:

  • International connectivity restored: The Dunedin–Gold Coast service has seen strong demand from New Zealand travellers, with work now focused on raising awareness and growing inbound visitation from Australia.
  • Major infrastructure programme: Upgrades included resurfacing of taxiways, a major freshwater system upgrade, and the assumption and renewal of airfield power and lighting assets. The terminal rooftop solar project and energy-efficient improvements - including LED lighting and HVAC optimisation - are already delivering measurable energy savings.
  • Once-in-a-generation investment: The airport is advancing one of its most significant capital works programmes in decades, ensuring long-term resilience of the terminal and airfield.
  • Sustainability leadership: A new Sustainability and Planning function has been established, laying the groundwork for the airport’s first Sustainability Report and supporting progress towards decarbonisation. Dunedin Airport achieved Airport Carbon Accreditation Level 3, with Level 4 targeted for FY26.
  • Safety excellence: A SafePlus external assessment rated the airport at “Performing” across leadership, worker engagement, and risk management — a strong endorsement of its safety culture.
  • Solid financial performance: Operating revenue grew 12.5% to $23.7 million, with an operating surplus of $6.2 million. Dividends of $5.2 million were paid to shareholders across the year.

Dunedin Airport CEO Daniel De Bono said the airport’s achievements are underpinned by its team and community.

“Our people are at the heart of everything we do. This year’s engagement survey showed consistently high scores in wellbeing, safety, and values alignment. It’s a privilege to lead a team that genuinely cares about each other, our customers, and the region we serve.”

Looking ahead, the airport is focused on delivering its Flight Plan 2050 strategy, ensuring progress today builds a resilient, sustainable, and customer-focused airport for generations to come.
