Dunedin Airport is proud to welcome Dunedin-based artist Sarah Freiburger to the terminal, with a new collection of eight paintings now on display across various locations throughout the airport.

Working primarily in acrylic, Freiburger creates richly detailed landscapes and still life works inspired by the New Zealand environment. Her paintings explore light, stillness, and beauty, offering travellers a quiet moment of connection as they move through the terminal. 

Originally from Stuttgart in southern Germany, Freiburger has called Dunedin home since 2011. Her work is deeply informed by time spent outdoors, particularly within the moss- and fern-filled forests of the lower South. These experiences are translated into immersive, light-filled scenes, capturing moments that feel both personal and distinctly local.

Alongside her landscape work, Freiburger’s still life paintings bring a contrasting sense of intimacy and precision. Built through delicate layers of paint, these works explore symmetry, pattern, and subtle shifts in colour and light, balancing technical detail with a strong sense of harmony. 

Now exhibited throughout the terminal, her work contributes to a more thoughtful and engaging airport experience that reflects the character of the region and the people who shape it. 

As part of our commitment to supporting local artists and community initiatives, Dunedin Airport continues to create opportunities for creative expression within the terminal. As the gateway to the lower South, we see our role as not only connecting people to destinations, but also connecting them to place.

Located throughout the terminal, Freiburger’s paintings invite passengers to pause, reflect, and experience a sense of the landscape before they’ve even left the ground.

Freiburger has exhibited widely across Dunedin since 2014, including with the Otago Art Society and Moray Gallery, and more recently completed a large-scale outdoor mural at Māori Hill School. Alongside her practice, she works as a primary school teacher and runs workshops for artists of all skill levels.
