Dunedin Airport Community Sponsorships: Celebrating Our 2024 Recipients

09 July 2024

At Dunedin Airport, we pride ourselves on being more than just a gateway to the Lower South region. Our mission is to share the unique beauty and vibrant culture of our community with the world, connecting people, businesses, and communities to our taoka (treasure). We believe in giving back to the region that supports us, and one of the ways we do this is through our annual Community Sponsorship Program.

Each year, Dunedin Airport allocates a portion of our operating revenue to support local organizations and initiatives that make a significant impact on our community. This program is designed to foster community engagement, promote regional development, and support causes that align with our values.

Recipients of the 2024 Sponsorship

We are thrilled to announce the recipients of this year's Dunedin Airport Community Sponsorships. These organizations exemplify the spirit of the Lower South region and contribute in meaningful ways to its wellbeing and growth.

Te Nohoaka o Tukiauau / Sinclair Wetlands - $5,000

The Sinclair Wetlands, also known as Te Nohoaka o Tukiauau, is a 315-hectare wetland complex south of Dunedin. This area is of immense cultural significance, owned by Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu, and valued for its ecological, recreational, and educational importance. The $5,000 donation will support ongoing habitat enhancement, weed and pest control, and reforestation efforts, ensuring the wetlands remain a treasured resource for future generations.

The Bowling Club - $5,000

Contrary to its name, The Bowling Club is a community eatery committed to providing healthy, delicious meals at affordable prices. This innovative initiative allows patrons to "pay it forward," ensuring that everyone has access to nutritious food regardless of their financial situation. Our $5,000 donation will fund 1,250 meals to help The Bowling Club continue its mission of fostering community through shared meals and locally sourced ingredients.

2024 Emerson's Dunedin Marathon - $5,000

The Dunedin Marathon is a highlight of the city's annual calendar, attracting participants from across New Zealand and beyond. By sponsoring this event, we aim to elevate its profile and encourage more people to experience the beauty of Dunedin. The event offers various race options, including a marathon, half marathon, 10k, and 5k, catering to runners of all levels.

Central Otago Clutha Trails Limited (COCTL) - $5,000

Cycle trails are a vital part of our region's tourism and recreational offerings. The Clutha Gold Cycle Trail, extending 135 km from Roxburgh to Waihola, showcases the diverse landscapes of the Lower South. Our $5,000 donation will support trail maintenance and connectivity projects, enhancing the overall experience for both locals and visitors.

Life Matters Suicide Prevention Trust - $5,000

Life Matters Suicide Prevention Trust provides crucial mental health support and suicide prevention services in our community. The funds will be used to offer free counselling sessions, suicide prevention training, and support for those affected by suicide. This donation reflects our commitment to the mental well-being of the Lower South region.

Staff-Selected Charities

In addition to the primary sponsorships, we invited our staff to nominate charities they are passionate about. The CEO selected three organizations from these nominations to receive $2,500 each:

  • Age Concern Otago: Supporting the well-being of older adults in our community.
  • Dunedin YSAR Branch: Youth Search and Rescue training and operations.
  • Ronald McDonald House Charities New Zealand: Providing accommodation and support for families of hospitalized children.

Additionally, Leukaemia & Blood Cancer NZ (Firefighter Sky Tower Challenge) will receive $500 to support their vital work in cancer treatment and research.

Conclusion

At Dunedin Airport, we are passionate about supporting our community and making a positive impact. We believe that by investing in local organizations and initiatives, we can help build a stronger, more vibrant region. We encourage everyone to stay engaged and support these worthy causes, helping us share the Lower South's unique treasures with the world.

Thank you for your continued support and commitment to our community.
